Sometimes trauma forces you to look inside. Fear sometimes holds us back. Trauma forces you to be truthful and change the things inside us that have not been working for the life we want to live.

We hear all the time that "change is good", but most times it's traumatic, I used to say change does'nt have to be so traumatic. But now I'm not so sure.
And what about when a change is forced on us? Versus a change we make ourselves?
Do we stress more or less? not sure. Either way I think about it a lot.

That's actually a good example of what I mean by "Nonsense," Lori, which can consist of both the frivolous or the deeply disturbing, depending on one's point of view. Based on what I know about the mortgage issue you cited, that one's pretty darn disturbing!

There is harmless nonsense, like hermit crab races and hermit crab beauty contests (as long as the hermit crabs aren't hurt), and there is serious, sometimes dangerous nonsense. Most of the topics you listed are candidates for the latter. I'll concentrate on religion and politics and the merging of the two. Taken separately both religion and politics have some negative aspects, but merged, it could be lethal, whether in the hands of Islamic extremists or in the hands of a Rick Perry and his followers. I don't think most of us want to see an America in which the government dictates which religion, if any, we follow; nor do we want a government in which the leaders' evangelical religious tenets dictate foreign and social policy. Unfortunately, if we are not careful, we may be headed in that direction.

Your definition of nonsense makes sense, though in a certain way it doesn't seem a strong enough word to describe my example or some of the others. The first thing that came to mind for me is what's happening in the mortgage industry. You hear infuriating stories of people being really screwed by their lenders, even when they have done what they have been told to do, which in itself is nonsense (the only way we can help you with a modification is if you stop paying?). We have a serious lack of control over such an important part of our lives, and no remedy in many cases. Nonsense!

American Idol is my example of Nonsense. Most people don't know who their Congressperson or Senators are, yet they know who to vote for on American Idol. I think what drives me crazy is how little people care about the government and voting, yet it can have such a large impact on their lives...more people voted during the last American Idol show than in the 2010 elections. Does it affect my life if one contestant beats another on American Idol? Not in the least. But the 2010 election resulted in bringing our economy to the edge of a cliff during the recent "Raising the Debt Ceiling" standoff. Elections also affect our laws, and also which justices get named to the supreme court in the next presidential term (either conservative or liberal). I just wish people paid more attention to politics so that in the next presidential election they didn't just vote for the person who looks better, or the person who would be more fun to hang out with at a bar.
